After centuriesneighborhood conflicts, Europe has created an unprecedented period of peace, prosperity and stability through the integration of states and their respective interests. Since the founding of the European Coal and Steel Community in 1950, the European Communities, and subsequently the European Union (EU), have guaranteed and enhanced these values among their member states for more than 65 years. The six founding members Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands with a total of 200 million inhabitants have today become an association of 28 member states with a population of over half a billion people. Today, the EU is not only the largest economic area in the world, but also a community of values whose members are committed to democracy, the rule of law, freedom and human rights, and who shape a large part of their policies jointly. Accordingly, continuing and deepening European integration and promoting this community of values are two important political goals for Germany.
