The 10th edition of Agrofood & Plastprintpack Nigeria marked a significant milestone as the leading trade fair platform in West Africa for innovation in the agrofood, plastics, printing and packaging sectors. This year, Germany was named “Guest of Honour” as a reflection of the growing partnership between Germany and Nigeria. It highlighted German expertise in the agrofood/ packaging sector and provided opportunities for collaboration, exchange of knowledge and business development between Nigerian and German stakeholders.

The three-day event (March 25th-27th) took place at the Landmark Event Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos. Organised by fairtrade Messe GmbH, a German trade fair company, the event brought together over a hundred leading exhibitors from twelve countries, including China, Finland, France, Germany, India, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Poland, South Africa and Turkey, presenting uniquely tailored products and solutions for the Nigerian market. Official national pavilions from China, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and South Africa were well represented, with the German pavilion having 14 exhibitors.

As Nigeria is facing ongoing food insecurity, it is pertinent to look for more ways to redesign, modernize and promote sustainable agricultural production and spread innovations. With investments in food & packaging technology amounting to €304m in 2023, Nigeria stands as Africa’s second-largest investor, trailing only South Africa with €398m and leading Egypt with €281m. (VDMA 2024). Despite significant investments in local food production, Nigeria’s food imports totaled US$6.1bn in 2023, positioning the nation as one of Africa’s foremost food importers. Nigerian food exports made up for US$2.2bn. (WTO). Therefore, in order to bridge the gap between Nigeria’s potential in food production and the actualization of improved food security, there needs to be more synergy between all the players within the agrofood value chain.

Beyond the lively exhibitions, the event facilitated thousands of targeted business discussions among industry stakeholders. There was an accompanying conference program which featured an impressive forty-two sessions with ninety expert speakers, who provided valuable insights into crucial industry trends, policy frameworks, as well as emerging investment opportunities. With a great potential for growth in agribusiness, Nigeria has the capacity to significantly improve its output. Germany (both private sector & government) continues to cooperate with Nigeria on agricultural issues politically, scientifically and economically.

The 11th Agrofood & Plastprintpack Nigeria is planned to take place from March 24th-26th 2026. See you there!
