Welcome
Help for German citizens
General information
Please note the cases in which consular assistance is available. Information can be found on the website of the Federal Foreign Office, including important telephone numbers and information on blocking credit cards, bank cards, and cell phones.
The legal and consular departments of the Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos are available to answer any questions you may have regarding passport and visa matters, as well as for certifications and other consular services.
Nevertheless, please familiarize yourself with the extensive information available on this website before contacting us with specific questions.
Emergencies
In an emergency, you can contact us using the contact form or by calling the telephone number below.
If you are a German citizen and find yourself in an acute emergency, you can reach the on-call service outside of office hours at the following number:
+234 (0) 704 157 6674
German missions abroad support those affected within the scope of their possibilities according to the principle of “helping people to help themselves.” Unfortunately, services such as flight bookings or cash withdrawals are not possible.
Please note that this number is only available for urgent, unavoidable emergencies that require immediate action by the German Embassy or the German Consulate General.
The emergency service does not deal with passport and visa matters!
Calls from withheld numbers will not be accepted!
Loss of money or passport
If your passport, documents, cash, or other valuables are stolen, contact the nearest police station immediately, report the theft, and obtain a copy of the loss report. Further information on passport loss can be found here.
Insurance companies generally insist on the presentation of a police report if the loss is to be compensated. The same applies to reapplying for a passport / ID card.
Loss of driver's license
Have you lost your German driver's license in Nigeria, or has it been stolen? If so, you should first report this immediately to the nearest Nigerian police station.
German driver's licenses are only issued by German authorities and must also be applied for in Germany. Please contact the driver's license office in your last place of residence in Germany directly. German diplomatic missions abroad cannot issue driver's licenses or other replacements.
Further information on replacement issuance can be obtained directly from the relevant driver's license office.
Illness or accident
Here you will find a list of doctors and hospitals. If you have exhausted all other options for assistance, we can inform your relatives and contact your travel insurance company upon request. However, we cannot pay any outstanding hospital or doctor's bills.
Arrest / detention
Please inform the German mission abroad immediately.
Information on the legal system and a list of lawyers can be found here.
We can inform friends or relatives upon request. However, we cannot hire a lawyer, cover legal fees, perform legal services, represent you in court, act as an interpreter, pay fines / penalties / bail, intervene in ongoing legal proceedings, or issue instructions to local authorities.
Missing persons
Is a German citizen missing and you, as their next of kin, fear that something may have happened to them? Please contact your diplomatic mission abroad.
Event of death
The death of a relative or friend is a cause for grief. When someone dies abroad, there are additional organizational issues that need to be dealt with. In the event of the death of a German citizen, the German mission abroad can notify the next of kin, provide advice on completing the formalities locally, and put them in touch with local funeral directors.
The urn or body can be transferred to Germany for burial. The Nigerian and German funeral homes will take care of the formalities.
Assistance for returnees
Are you considering returning to Germany? Are you wondering what you need to consider in terms of job hunting, applications, family, and social security with regard to your return to Germany?
The International Placement Services (ZAV) of the Federal Employment Agency offers you assistance as an advisory partner and regularly provides free web tutorials that you can register for.
The Customer Center of the International Placement Services (ZAV) informs returnees about their opportunities and possibilities in advance of their return. You can also register online with the Federal Employment Agency's job exchange and obtain further information from the Employment Agency at your future or last place of residence in Germany.
