On Monday 3rd November, the Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Lagos, Mr. Daniel Krull, hosted a delegation of German film professionals to a networking event with Nigerian film professionals. Professionals from the film equipment companies, directors, producers, actors, animators and legal professionals, met together to discover increased avenues for collaborations.

As the German film industry delegation’s visit to Lagos coincided with the African Film Festival, it aimed to foster new partnerships between Nigerian and German film companies, exchange expertise and showcase German innovation in the film sector. The visit was organised by SBS (Systems for Business Solutions GmbH) in collaboration with AHK Nigeria (Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Nigeria), under the patronage of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

Speaking at the accompanying press conference, CG Daniel reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to expanding economic, cultural and scientific cooperation in Lagos and other states within his consular jurisdiction in southern Nigeria. He outlined his priorities since assuming office in August 2025, emphasizing the importance of deepening people-to-people exchanges.

“This visit marks an important outreach by German movie companies to Nigeria…”, he said.

The Consul General expressed optimism about bilateral economic relations citing Germany’s longstanding trade partnership with Lagos as the economic epicenter of Nigeria. Nigeria is Germany’s largest trading partner in West Africa and second largest in sub-Saharan Africa.

He also highlighted ongoing collaborations such as the partnership between the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg and young filmmakers from Benin City, Edo State, supported by both the Nigerian and German governments. One of the project’s films, ỌKPẸN-ẸZẸ (By the Riverside), produced in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Lagos, was screened at the Consulate.

Krull emphasized that such initiatives demonstrate the “bottom-up momentum” that drives sustainable creative partnerships and cultural exchange between both nations. He also highlighted Germany’s €6 million support for the Museum of West African Arts in Benin City, which will host the Nigeria Imaginaries exhibition previously shown in Venice in 2024.

“There is a wide basket of promising areas of cooperation, and I hope to act as a facilitator across sectors,” Krull concluded.
