Financial means

Article

Some visa categories require you to provide evidence that you have sufficient financial resources to support yourself.

The required amount must cover the total amount needed for your planned stay in Germany, up to a maximum of one year.

Examples:

3-month language course in Germany: You must provide proof of funds totaling €3,273 (3 × €1,091).
2-year degree programme in Germany: You must provide proof of funds totaling €11,904 (12 × €992). Although the programme lasts two years, proof is only required for a maximum of one year.

There are three possible ways to secure your financial means.

1) Blocked account
Open the blocked account in good time BEFORE applying for a visa. When applying for a visa, only the official confirmation of the account opening—including information on the amount paid in and the amount available per month—will be accepted. A confirmation that does not include this information is not sufficient. Proof of lodgement or transfer of funds without the aforementioned confirmation from the bank is not sufficient.

2) Formal obligation (not older than six months)
Document must be presented in original + one copy.
Formal obligation(“Verpflichtungserklärung”) according to Sec. 66–68 of the German Residence Act, covering the entire duration of stay, signed by a person living in Germany at the local competent office in Germany.

The formal obligation can only be accepted as adequate proof of finance with the remark “nachgewiesen” (the financial capability of the sponsor has been verified).

3) Part-time job
In some cases, you can work part-time to secure your financial means.
Employment contract for a part-time job in Germany (up to 20 hours per week, net €1,091/month).
